Episode 28: Men's Names

For this the 28th instalment of the Threadwork podcast I return to a theme from a while back - names. I did a Women’s Names episode for the fifteenth episode and nearly the same amount of episodes later I tackle men’s names. I mention this in the intro but there are a few songs with a strong and definable narrative to them (read: story songs) in the opening section of the podcast and I was surprised at how many of these types of records made it to the long-list. In fact there was a version of the episode that had really quite a few of them but I switched it up a bit because I like to have lots of different types of pieces of music in an instalment. But it was interesting to see how many ‘story songs’ there were - maybe because they are centred around real or composites of people. After all, if you’re titling your music with a ‘real’ name then it’s not a leap to suggest you have someone in mind when doing so.

Either way, I’m really pleased with how the episode turned out and hopefully you’ll dig it too. Until next time…

Cheers,

R

Episode 27: Penelope Isles

For the 27th instalment of the Threadwork podcast I chat to the excellent sibling-led band Penelope Isles about their relationship to music, their relationship to each other through music and many other things besides. The conversation was recorded with Jack and Lily Wolter back in November 2018 just before the band’s support slot at Rough Trade Bristol and so there’s a fair amount of background noise but hopefully it enhances the recording rather than detracts.

As well as the conversation with the band this episode also contains, as a bonus, a live recording of the gig they played that very night - a bit of a first for Threadwork for sure.

Penelope Isles’ ‘Until The Tide Creeps In’ album is out now on Bella Union and it’s marvellous - check out the link to purchase below.

Until next time…

Episode 26: Myths & Fiction

For the 26th instalment of Threadwork here’s a selection of amazing music that uses fiction as its inspiration. Although it wasn’t until I started pulling together all these pieces of music that I realized that much of it came from mythology (Greek predominantly) and so I had to expand the title to make the distinction. And this is fine. The ‘themes’ are supposed to work for the music not the other way round - it’s not meant to be a race to pack in as much highbrow stuff as possible - it’s very much about trying to give a coherent framework for the music I want to play. Although I’m starting to reach the stage where the themes are becoming a little restrictive but I can’t quite find a way to break away from them. Yet.

Anyway, this inside baseball stuff is all well and good but it doesn’t mean a bloody thing. What does matter is that some of the music included in this episode is, in my hugely biased opinion, some of the finest you could hope to hear and myself and Producer Bod are really pleased with how it’s turned out. If you’re a fan of mid-2000s left-of-centre house music you’ll be set here. Likewise if you’re prone to tearing up when you hear classical strings covering an already emotional fist-pumping slice of French indie-pop then you’ll be in your element too. And if you like both of those things and more then, hey, we should hang sometime.

Cheers,

R

Episode 25: Space Part 2

This is the second and concluding part of the Space episodes of the Threadwork podcast. And in a way this is maybe not the but certainly a distillation of what Space in music can feel like. At least as far as I’m concerned - there’s not a chance in hell I’m making that assertion for anyone else. And all I really mean is that genre-wise and record-wise so many of these records just really make me feel spacey. The music sounds like it’s beaming in from, setting out towards or orbiting in perfect harmony, space. They’re so evocative, conjuring images of inky blackness and pinpricks of light that are so much more than they seem - unfathomably so.

On that note, evocative is a word I keep coming back to when describing music I play on the podcast, which is leading me to add more weight to that ability to evoke either images or feelings being ‘a Thread’ - and this is a podcast that seeks to work out what it is that links together all this amazing music.

Anyway, there may only be 9 pieces of music in this episode but what a 9 they are. Headphones would do you well on this one. But even if you don’t listen to the podcast that way - I hope you dig it and the music in whichever way you so.

Cheers,

Episode 24: Space Part 1

So here is the first of two episodes of the Threadwork podcast that use space as their theme. And by space I mean in the cosmic sense - planets, galaxies, stars and the like. I’ve always loved space - it’s so evocative and it makes perfect sense to me that so much music would inspired by it. It’s so huge and unknowable and, to a certain extent, incomprehensible just by virtue of the sizes and distances often involved. The perfect example being the answer to the question - what is a light year? It sounds like a thing we can comprehend. A year is understandable, 1 as a number we can get our heads around. But a light year is a unit of distance and equates to approximately 5.8 trillion miles. Just consider that number for a second. Can you even begin to comprehend it? To truly get your head around it? I’m not sure it’s possible given our limited context - as in the world we interact with on a daily basis. It’s fascinating and scary and in the truest sense of the word, awe-inspiring.

I like space.

Anyway, here are just a few of the dozens of tracks that could have made it on to an episode - I hope you dig them.

Cheers,

Episode 23: Numbers Part 2

So this is the second of a two-part set of episodes based around the theme of numbers. Unsurprisingly there are a lot of records that have some kind of relationship to numbers and whether it’s by sheer weight of numbers (no pun intended) or some other reason, the two episodes I’ve pulled together using that as a theme has allowed me to play some of my most loved pieces of music across a plethora of genres and styles.

This particular instalment almost has a half and half split of styles - the first half being primarily song-based whilst the second is primarily electronic and instrumental. Primarily being the key word because there’s crossover - but if you were being reductive that’s how you could split them up. For me it’s really enjoyable because I get to showcase brilliant lyricists one moment and then have a beat mix across a few house records the next. What it all means it’s hard to say but it’s a boatload of fun pulling together all these records. Hope you enjoy them.

Cheers,

This is the first of a two parter (part 2 drops in a fortnight) and contains simply incredible music from the likes of Teebs, Pepe Bradock, The Avalanches, Terron and loads more besides.

Episode 21: Anatomy

So here we are then, the first instalment of Threadwork in 2019 and for this episode I’ve pulled together a bunch of amazing music that all have some relationship to the theme of ‘anatomy’. I’m really pleased with how this one has turned out and there’s a good breadth of music on show so hopefully you’ll get something out of it. Also, I’m not sure whether anyone’s ever mixed Elbow into Fudge Fingas before so it’s probably worth the admission fee for that alone.

Cheers,

R

Episode 20: Music of 2018 Part 2

So this is the final episode of the year and it is, as billed, the second of a two part retrospective of 2018. It follows on thematically from part 1 (episode 19) but I suppose that’s self-evident from the title. But what I really mean is that it’s music that I thought was exceptional that was (mostly) released in the calendar year 2018. I say mostly, because I got confused and included a record from 2017 that I discovered in 2018. Doesn’t really matter though as it’s a really good record but just thought I’d get the qualifier in early!

Captured in this episode and the last is some of the music that has really set me alight and inspired me. And here’s the thing: what with the time it takes pulling every instalment of Threadwork together, for the most part of 2018 I didn’t listen to as much new music as I would normally. I simply haven’t had the time to really get stuck into new music as I would’ve liked - especially in the house and techno world where I think you have to dig a bit more to find what really shines for you as an individual. So there’s a fair few things that have come from the radio and other bits I’ve just picked up in the ether. Things from labels and artists I’ll always check out because I know they’ll be interesting but also from Spotify algorithms. And the latter is probably an important one to name-check because I reckon there might be a bit of a stigma about citing that as a source of discovery. Maybe I’m wrong about that but either way I reckon I’ve worked the system sufficiently to get Spotify to ‘push’ me things that are of a high quality and that I dig.

Anyway, none of the above matters other than for context. As I always, I just hope that some of these records strike a chord with you. And if they do, the links to purchase them can be found below.

Have a great end of year, thank you so much for listening (and if you’re new to it all then have a work through the back cat - it’s all good stuff) and I’ll catch you at one point in 2019.

Cheers,

R

Episode 19: Music of 2018 Part 1

I know it’s a fairly obvious thing to do but taking stock of what has just been when it comes to music is often a great deal of fun. And anyway given that Threadwork isn’t a new music arms race, having an excuse to pull together a load of exquisite pieces of music from the year that is rapidly coming to an end (2018) is, I think, a perfectly legit thing to do. These are, after all, incredible pieces of music in their own right and would definitely have made it into episodes at one point - so why not now without the tyranny of a theme to fit into? Nobody loses here!

When I look back at what made it into the shortlist and the actual episode and start to think about what this might mean from a thread perspective, the results are a little interesting (to me). I go into this in the spoken intro of the podcast and given that you’re unlikely to be just reading this instead of actually listening then I won’t repeat myself here. Suffice to say that there are large swathes of this episode that would benefit from you having time to sit and relax whilst listening. The use of a good pair of headphones would assist greatly too because some of the music is wonderfully nuanced and a different experience is available to you in that context. It doesn’t really matter if you can’t do that though - listening at all is simply fine and very much appreciated.

All that’s really left to say is that I hope you enjoy this, the 19th instalment of Threadwork, the first of two episodes looking back at 2018. It’s the penultimate episode of the year so I’ll see you in a fortnight for the second part and the final Threadwork of 2018. Hasn’t time flown?

Cheers,

R
